For 40 years, interpretation has been an important part of Miller Metal Imaging’s work.
From interpretive signage and botanical labels to wayfinding, custom hardware and complete signage projects, we have worked alongside councils, national parks, botanic gardens, designers, consultants and community organisations to help bring stories, landscapes and places to life.
That long-standing connection to the industry is why we were proud to sponsor the 2026 Interpretation Australia Conference – Ripples of Meaning: The Art of Interpretation.
Held in Canberra at the National Museum of Australia, the conference brought together interpretation professionals from across the country to share ideas, explore new approaches and discuss the future of interpretation. This year’s theme focused on the way meaning can move through a project from place to people, from the past to the present, and from information to deeper understanding.
Supporting an industry we’re passionate about
Interpretation has changed significantly over the past four decades, but the purpose behind it remains familiar: helping people better understand and connect with the places, stories, environments and communities around them.
Interpretation Australia describes interpretation as a way of communicating ideas and knowledge that can deepen people’s understanding of places, culture, events and objects, while creating more meaningful visitor experiences.
That philosophy closely reflects the projects Miller has supported throughout its history.
Our role may involve producing a single interpretive panel from supplied artwork, or supporting a complete project through planning, design, production, custom hardware and installation. Across each project, the objective is the same: to create signage that communicates clearly while remaining durable enough for the environment in which it will be experienced.
Durable signage for meaningful places
Interpretive signage is often installed in locations where materials must perform for many years.
National parks, coastal environments, botanic gardens, heritage sites and public spaces can expose signage to:
- UV radiation
- rain and moisture
- salt air
- temperature changes
- regular public interaction
- cleaning and maintenance
For this reason, material selection and production methods are an important part of any interpretation project.
Miller specialises in Photo Anodised Aluminium printing, a process well suited to interpretive signage because detailed text, photographs, illustrations and full-colour graphics can be reproduced within a durable anodised surface.
This allows designers and interpretation teams to create visually engaging signage without compromising on long-term outdoor performance.
